What is Slackware?

Slackware is the oldest of the distributions that are in common use today with the first release dated July 16, 1993, and is typically a familiarity amongst Linux veterans. It is designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities.

Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table. Slackware uses tarballs as its package format and includes a package management utility, which tends to be simpler than Debian's, in part because it offers fewer options. This format, while highly portable, offers little in the way of dependency checking or upgradability. It can be a moderate hang-up for a newbie. However, we also pre-install slapt-get, a package management utility that closely resembles Debian's apt-get in look and feel.

Slackware is an excellent choice for VPS/Vserver customers with moderate Linux experience and requiring a simple and unbloated system, reliablilty, and stability.
